Just wanted to share something my friend Lauren passed on to me recently, which is a fantastic photojournalism project. It reminds me a bit of one I blogged about a while back featuring families from all around the world and their weekly diet. This one is called Delicatessen with Love by Gabriele Galimberti, and in it, we see grandmothers from around the world alongside a meal that they have prepared. I love it!
The ingredients are artistically laid out in front of the ladies, creating something between a still life and a portrait. What I love about these kinds of projects as part of the cookery genre, is that the cook (not celebrity chef…) comes out from behind the scenes and is featured just as centrally as the food and ingredients. They place food in its real cultural context, and put real people in their culinary context. When it comes to thinking about cooking as an art very tied up with memory, it makes sense to document both the recipe and the one making it, especially when it’s Grandma.
